Last week I visited Nashua-Plainfield Elementary School in Nashua, Iowa, and had a blast sharing poetry and writing techniques with the students, from Kindergarten through fourth grade. In the evening I even had a chance to speak to the kids and their parents at a community family event at the school. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of families that came to the event, even though it was the height of the harvest season in the middle of the corn belt. Thanks N-P for a great day!
The local newspaper, the Charles City Press, wrote a terrific article about my visit. Click on the Read more... link below to read Read more... |

To write and record a piece of music that helps keep kids safe - that's an honor! The Mary Bridge Center for Childhood Safety recently produced a live-action DVD promoting booster seat safety. Go Where Your Booster Takes You is being provided to preschool and primary classrooms throughout the northwest. I had the privilege of writing and recording the hook-heavy jingle Use a Booster for this project. The song turns up four times during the seven minute video. I hope it makes the message that much more memorable for the kids who see this fun little film.

Although I normally visit many different schools throughout the year, I have never visited with more than one school at a time. Yesterday was different. Through the magic of the Internet, I was able to visit with six different schools -- as far apart as Texas and Michigan -- all simulatneously.
I have started visiting schools "virtually" through 21st Century Learning, a company that provides high-quality educational programs for public, private, and homeschooled students. Their Passport programs use videoconferencing presentation software to offer live, interactive presentations with authors, storytellers, and subject-matter experts. |

Last week I had the pleasure of visiting a number of schools in Nebraska, including St. Gerald's School in Ralston, near Omaha. At St. Gerald's I was able to talk with students from Kindergarten through 8th grade, and we all had a terrific time sharing and creating poetry together.
Yesterday the local newspaper, The Ralston Recorder, wrote an article about my visit to St. Gerald's and included a photo of me performing a poem for a group of students. For years Jack Prelutsky has been known informally as a poet
laureate for kids. Now the Poetry Foundation has made it official,
naming him the nation’s first Children’s Poet Laureate and putting a
prestigious stamp of approval on the man and his work. So just what is
it about Prelutsky that compels this respect? Why do kids write him
letters and hug him when he turns up for school visits? Why do adults
take his work seriously?
